Two primary justifications for integrating faith and Montessori education
But why add the Christian dimension? We have two primary justifications for Christian Montessori.
"We can express it thus: the Montessori Method is an aid to the development of the human spirit; but the human spirit cannot find its complete expansion anywhere else but in God."
God is very mindful of the development of children, as indicated throughout Scripture. He commands parents and communities to nurture children in the way of the Lord, teaching them diligently and consistently.
"For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD..."
"And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children..."
"But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring..."
"But Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven'."
Cosmic Education is the Montessori framework for integrated and interconnected learning. It seeks to bring the knowledge of the universe to children in a meaningful way.
"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse."
Our position is that Cosmic Education should point the child to God. It is impossible to teach about the origins of the universe devoid of a worldview.
In the first plane of development, children receive fundamental concepts and skills—the building blocks that allow them to begin exploring their immediate environment. From birth to three, the child unconsciously absorbs these concepts through daily living. From 2.5 to 6, children receive Keys to the World: fundamental concepts across language, mathematics, sensory activities, and practical life skills.
The second plane extends this foundation into a more expansive view. Children receive Keys to the Universe— broader and more abstract concepts connecting earlier lessons to a larger context. This includes geography, history, biology, and sciences, showing the interconnectedness of all things and sparking curiosity about the world beyond immediate experience.
"I would discuss these things with my mother. Of course, we were in a country where the Christian belief was not in the majority. I would argue with my mother that every religion has its version of creation—that it was not fact. But as we studied we saw that there was a connection between the evolution of life and the Book of Genesis."
"Cosmic education is that education which opens up for the child a vision of all that the world was meant to be, through collaboration of man's efforts with God's."
